unusual Meriden Silver Plate Co. butter
dish/holder/server
Item number: SIL24030139
Price: $350
This
stunning Meriden Silver Plate Co. (USA) butter dish, complete with its
original tray inside, dates from the late 19th century c1870. The lower
chamber would have been filled with ice in summer and warm water in
winter so the butter on the tray would be soft, but not runny. The
butter holder also has a handle from which one can hang the lid. the
engraving on the lid is exceptional. The overall condition is very
good, although there is a little pitting inside the cooling/heating
chamber, which can easily removed and sanded away (use steel wool). The
bottom is marked Meriden Silver Plate Co 1332 1/2. The piece is
quadruple silver-plated on top of Britannia metal which is largely a
tin alloy. The top of the frame is about about 27 cms high, which gives
you an idea of its size. The knife rest (bit missing on one and a bit
bent on the other are figural vulture heads. The top of the lid is a
figural berry and there are some flowers and leaves on the sides of the
arched handle.

figural Nautilus shell spoon warmer/holder c1870
Item number: SIL08112356
Price: $585
This is a lovely Victorian figural silverplate
spoon warmer/holder in the shape of a Nautilus shell sitting on an
ocean floor. There are smaller shells and rocks over the base.
The spoon warmer is approximately 17.5 cms long x 10 cms wide x 13.5
cms high ( or 7" x 4" x 5 1/2").
It is silverplate. The plating is in good condition. No flaking or
pitting or peeling. There is some wear to the plating with hints of
brass showing through slightly.
The lid lifts up. The hinge is beautifully concealed with a clever
engraving on the top.
I have not cleaned the item, so there is some dust in the photos. There
is also some silver cleaning residue in places. The inside needs a good
clean....looks to be copper-ish, but could be brass.??
There are a couple of little dents at the front end of the spoon
warmer. You can probably even push them out. Other than that there is
no other damage to list.
The spoon warmer is hallmarked HA EA FA EPNS 1337 6 over (a cross in a
circle? see photos).....the middle bit which screws the top to the
bottom is also hallmarked with the same 6 over a cross in a circle. The
hallmark is an early mark for the Atkins Brothers.....Harry Atkin,
Edward Atkin and Frank Atkin, who worked in Sheffield from 1853. I
would say this spoon warmer is c1870.
The spoon warmer weighs about 750 gms, so it quite weighty.
