Harrison subject: KINARI aboriginal hunter
item
mnumber: ART31072316
Price:
$450
This is lovely portrait painting on hardboard (specially treated) of
"Kinari" (aboriginal hunter)....details on back of painting. It is
signed Rona Harrison. It is framed and probably dates to the 1960s or
1970s...very Retro use of colours.
Rona
Harrison is a known Australian artist, and I believe she is an
aboriginal artist too. On this website it refers to her as being her
favorite artist and calls her "Nanna", and aboriginal endearment; her
work is held in the Holdsworth galleries; on this site she is listed as
having won the 2004 Hedland Award for best work on paper ((6) Best Work
on Paper $1,500, Sponsor: Northern Edge Consultants, Winning Work:
Roundup by Rona Harrison). This would seem to suggest that the painting
we are selling is an early work by Rona Harrison, as it looks
distinctly 1960s or 1970s to me in the use of colour and it;s framing.
Here is some information on the Hedland
award:
History
of the Hedland Art Award:
In
2000 HARTZ revived the Hedland Art Award, which had previously been run
by the Hedland Rotary Club. HARTZ hosted the Award in the Civic Centre
and in the following year it was held in the newly renovated Courthouse
Arts Centre and Gallery. The Courthouse was a joint venture of the
Pilbara Arts Crafts and Designs and the Town of Port Hedland . The
generosity of members and local sponsors has been overwhelming. In four
years the total sponsorship has doubled to $23,000. The Hedland Art
Award is now a major focus for Pilbara artists. It has provided
far-reaching benefits for local residents and artists by assisting to
develop a bright and vibrant arts community. This year’s event has
attracted major sponsorship from BHP Billiton, whose long-standing
support of the Awards has assisted in the growth and development of
this exciting event.
Also,
if you do a search on her name (type "Rona Harrison" into Google) you
will find she was also listed in the GFL Fine Art Galleries (for
sale)....take a look, as these galeries sell exclusive art by people
like Pro-Hart, Djanghara, Grey-Smith, and Norman Lindsay.
