old colonial WA surveyor's maps c1880

early colonial photo-lithographic
surveyor's maps
Western Australia c1880's
Murchison region
Austin's track
Surveyor General Office, Perth, WA 1881
C. Woodhouse

above shows close up of one of the maps
There are
about 20 maps in this old cannister I found as is, with some 20 odd
hand-drawn photo-lithographic surveyor's maps of some region in
outback Western Australia. Some have "Austin's Track"
on them, and the Murchison River. I believe these are loctaed
east/inland of
Kalbarri, and Kalbarri National Park. I have photographed one of these
maps below, actually 2 maps stuck together. Some of the other landmarks
in the photographed map include Geraldine Mine, which I believe is
close to the town of
Yarranda. Western Australia was not settled until 1828 so these are
rather early map. That reagion was basically explored between 1850 and
1890. The maps are generally in very good condition, just a couple of
foxing
spots on some of them, a few with bent over corners etc. The
photographed map shown below is signed C. Woodhouse, Feb
1881. Each part of 2 in this photograph was priced at 2/6 (2 shillings
and 6 pence) which would have
been a lot of money in its time. The size of the photographed map (two
joined as one)
is about 98 cms x 37 cms. Some of the otehr maps are bigger than this
and soem smaller. The material is like paper on cloth. In
very good condition for age.
Here's a photograph of the old
tin cannister I found
them in,
and of the rest of the maps in a tight bundle.
